We’ve all experienced it when we’re completely immersed in writing with words pouring out effortlessly before suddenly BAM! Somebody calls you on the phone or someone knocks on your door while you're writing and you suddenly remember you forgot to take out the laundry from the washer. Just like that, your focus is shattered.

Resuming your writing after an interruption seems impossible at first but in reality it doesn't have to be. Follow these three fast methods that help you regain focus and recover your writing momentum in minutes.
1. Re-read the Last Paragraph You Wrote
When you feel like losing your train of thought takes over, pause to breathe deeply and find your last written paragraph by scrolling up. Reading your previous work helps refresh your memory and reestablishes your connection to your narrative or argument. Reading your last paragraph allows you to recall your writing direction and resume your work effortlessly.
2. Write a ‘Bad’ Sentence on Purpose
Perfectionism is often the enemy of progress. Write a deliberately poor or humorous sentence to ease yourself back into writing because this reduces perfectionist pressure and restarts your typing flow. You have the option to come back later for revisions.
3. Set a Five-Minute Timer
Begin your writing session by committing to five minutes of writing time. After beginning your writing session you will likely continue past the five-minute mark. The most difficult aspect is beginning but this approach lets you get back into writing without any feelings of overload.
Final Thoughts
Writing sessions will encounter interruptions but they need not cause complete breakdowns in your workflow. Utilizing these rapid techniques will help you regain control of your concentration and maintain your creative flow.
