Writers frequently dive into their imaginations to create characters and worlds while sitting at their desks. Inspiration often evades us when we sit before an empty page. To find creative inspiration we must leave familiar surroundings and let the world around us stimulate our creativity.

I recently paid a visit to the Ingram Planetarium in NC with my family. I had no sci-fi writing project underway and didn't need to visit the planetarium for any specific purpose but just an outing.

Stepping Into the Cosmos

Entering the theater with its subdued lighting triggered an immediate change within me. The combination of quiet whispers and projector light under the large dome above carried me away from my ordinary world. The show started by placing me in the center of swirling galaxies and constellations while a soft-voiced narrator led us through the universe.

The show gave me a unique experience of space's grandeur that I had never felt before. And then, the writer in me started asking questions: What would happen to a person who became lost while wandering among the stars? What if the constellations whispered secrets? An ancient civilization could have created a celestial map that exists in the night sky.

Why Writers Need to Get Out

Writing appears to happen only at our computers but stories actually begin well before we start typing. These moments mark the beginning when we enter unknown spaces and allow our curiosity to take the lead.

Visiting the planetarium might lead to a sci-fi story concept. Taking a stroll through a botanical garden might open the door to a world filled with fantasy. A historic site visit might spark the creation of a historical drama. Our inspiration sources remain a mystery until we actively seek out firsthand experiences.

Bringing It Back to the Page

Following my visit I kept detailed notes which included both my observations and emotional responses. The awe-inspiring vastness of the universe combined with human humbleness and infinite possibilities all provide material for potential storytelling. Though I might never pen a book about space, that night's feelings and experiences will definitely influence my future work.

When you find yourself unable to create or feel separated from your creative spirit step away from your desk. Go somewhere new. Experience something unexpected. The stories waiting to be discovered remain unknown until you find them.

Reflect on the most recent location you visited which inspired you. Let’s talk in the comments!
